Program Overview

Leading a team has its challenges: Supervisors and managers have to motivate and communicate across a wide range of personalities and skill levels, and be experts on City policy and procedure. DHR’s 24-PLUS Performance Management Program integrates standard models for supervision with the basics of administering City policies and procedures. Supervisors and managers focus on self-management first, and then learn basic models for supervision, including: Situational Leadership II and coaching performance. In addition, participants learn how to set expectations and provide feedback using the City’s performance planning and appraisal process, as well as how to address performance and conduct issues, while managing interpersonal relations honestly and respectfully.

Program Format

The 24-PLUS Online performance management program blends self paced online learning with instructor-led virtual sessions. The program takes place over a five-week period, starting with an online orientation, where participants learn how to access the online modules. Then in each of the following weeks, participants complete self-paced training modules to prepare for weekly instructor-led online sessions, where they are able to apply the learning using case studies and their own situations.

Workshop Requirements

Current Supervisor or Manager

This workshop focuses on building basic supervision skills and managing the performance of others, and requires participants to apply the learning through discussions, case studies or other activities. The activities rely on the participants’ ability to apply the learning to their own situation. For this reason, attendees should be current supervisors or managers with at least one direct report and/or an HR professional who will be supporting supervisors and managers in their performance management role.

Attendance

Participants are required to complete all required online modules before each instructor-led session. In addition, participants must complete each instructor-led session in its entirety. Potential attendees should consider their work commitments and calendar prior to signing up for a session in order to ensure completion of the entire program. Those who cannot commit the required time are encouraged to enroll at a time of year when they will be able to complete the entire program.

Computer Access

Self-paced Online sessions require a commitment of 2-4 hours per week. Computers with internet capability are necessary in order to access the required learning portals and the facilitator led online sessions. Employees who do not have access to a work computer are encouraged to work with their department to gain access to a computer. Employees unable to make arrangements through their department should contact the DHR Workforce Development Division to discuss alternate arrangements.

Selecting a Session

Please note that each program is designated for either Supervisors or Managers. Attendees may self-select into the course that they feel will best meet their needs. Online content for both courses will be identical, however, some case studies and discussion might vary depending on the designation.

  • 24-PLUS for Supervisors is for those who directly supervise front line staff.
  • 24-PLUS for Managers is for mid-level managers and executive level staff who have supervisory and management staff reporting to them.

Cancellations are strongly discouraged as there is long wait list for this workshop, and it may take up to 5 months to re-enroll.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any available sessions for the 24 PLUS workshop?

All current available sessions are published on the Workforce Development website here. The workshop schedule is updated on a weekly basis. Any workshop date that is labeled: Wait List Only is filled to capacity and is no longer available. Please enroll in the next available workshop. If you would like to be placed on the waitlist for another session, please indicate this on your enrollment form, and we can add you to a wait list, while ensuring that you have a space in an open session. Those on the wait list will be only be contacted if there are cancellations.

I want to enroll in a 24 PLUS workshop, but I am not sure if I should sign up for the workshop for supervisors or managers, what should I do?

For the purposes of this program, managers are those who have direct reports that also supervise staff. If you do not have direct reports that supervise staff, you should enroll in the 24 PLUS for Supervisor’s workshop (even if your title is manager). Please note that the curriculum for both sessions is exactly the same, however we do ask that participants self-select into the correct session, for the purposes of working with others in similar roles.

I want to sign up for an upcoming 24 PLUS workshop, but I am going already have a pre-planned vacation/meeting/event and I will not be able to attend one of the sessions. Is this OK?

No. Each 24 PLUS session builds on the previous sessions, so we ask that you take all sessions in sequence. Please enroll in a session where you have availability to attend all sessions. If there is an emergency or illness during the session and you unexpectedly need to miss a session, we can work with you to reschedule, however, this is the rare exception. All classes are fully booked, and it can be difficult to find an available make up session, so make ups are granted only in unexpected emergency situations.

I have a group at my department that would like to take 24 PLUS. Can we have a workshop series just for our group?

Yes. Group workshops can be arranged and can provide a cost savings for departments that can send 16-20 people. Approximately 6-8 sets of dates are reserved for departmental group workshops each fiscal year. These dates are available on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve a departmental date, contact the DHR Workforce Development Division at wd.dhr@sfgov.org for a list of available dates. A list of dates and a service agreement with the quoted pricing will be provided. A departmental contact must sign and return the agreement, and the dates will be confirmed.

Please Note: Departmental dates are often reserved quickly and are sometimes reserved nearly a year in advance so please contact us when you are budgeting and planning for the next fiscal year, so we can help you reserve your preferred dates.

I am thinking about promoting to supervision or management position. Is it OK for me to take 24 PLUS before I promote?

Attendees must be current supervisors or managers with at least one direct report. This workshop focuses on building basic supervision skills and managing the performance of others, and requires participants to apply the learning to their own current supervision situation. Please note that the Lead to Succeed program is a great option for those currently in a lead role, or for someone who is looking to gain some basic supervisor knowledge prior to promoting. Please see the Lead to Succeed page for details.
